Field Guide to Beetles of New Zealand

Authors Carl Wardhaugh, Richard Leschen and Bryce McQuillen
Rights Available World excl. NZ

This will be the first attempt in New Zealand to provide a guide to beetles. It focuses on covering all the families in New Zealand, giving examples of common species, covering around 700 species in all. For many species (perhaps most) the images in the book will be the only ones available anywhere. The combination of its taxonomic comprehensiveness, and the high number of diagnostic images of common or important species, will make this guide an essential resource for any researcher, student, amateur, or nature enthusiast with an interest in New Zealand’s unique beetle fauna.

About the Author
Carl Wardhaugh is an entomologist specialising in beetles at Scion in Rotorua, New Zealand.

Bryce McQuillen is New Zealand’s leading insect photographer and co-author of the Photographic Guide to Spiders of New Zealand (New Holland).

Richard Leschen is the co-editor of three volumes of the Handbook of Zoology (De Gruyter) on beetles.

This is a remarkable book. The scholarly value of the text is extraordinarily high. It is clearly written for a lay nature- or science-inclined audience but seems to sacrifice very little in the way of technical accuracy to achieve this. It contains an absolute wealth of information that is fun to browse all in one place and seems to leave surprisingly little unsaid. The images are second-to-none.
