The historic Havelock Cemetery in Marlborough is the final resting place for many influential figures from New Zealand’s early development. This book, titled History from the Grave, examines those interred within the 675 plots spanning from the 1860s to the 1920s. It is a collection of short stories that highlights the pioneering settler families such as Wilson, Harvey, Farnell, Wells, Gwillim, Rush, and the Taranaki refugee families including Climo, Foote, Gibbons, and Pope. The narrative covers significant events such as the Wakamarina and Cullensville gold rushes, the contributions of sawmillers and bushmen, and the trials they faced. Additionally, it explores the roles of farmers, tradespeople, and professionals who have significantly contributed to the foundation and enrichment of contemporary society.
Today, we are metaphorically ‘standing on the shoulders of giants’ from our past. This idiom, often attributed to Sir Isaac Newton, implies that we build upon the knowledge of earlier thinkers to advance intellectually. The individuals interred in Havelock Cemetery were exceptional figures of their era. Among them was John Wilson, an intrepid pioneer and gold discoverer. Henry Godsiff, known for his innovative ventures, alongside Sydney Higgins and John Bown, revered as the King of Pelorus Valley, made significant contributions. William Ross Brownlee, dubbed the King of Sawmillers, exemplified industriousness and innovation within the Brownlee family.
Additionally, the cemetery honours remarkable women who achieved success against formidable odds, such as Ellen Goding, a hotel proprietor, and Sarah Brown, whose resilience led her to prosper. Noteworthy figures like Jock ‘Wildman’ Langmuir, known for his rugged lifestyle and tragic end, and publicans Billy Dorren and Moses Fear, notable for their spirited antics.
Reading this book may encourage you to explore your own past and learn about the prominent figures in your ancestry.
