A vivid and powerful historical novel where a cast of characters with secrets travel from far and wide to witness the eighth wonder of the world: the Pink and White Terraces.
Rotorua district, June 1886: Upper-class Englishman Cyprian Marsh hates the colonies, but he’s hot on the trail of his missing half-brother, who stands to inherit a lot of money. Marsh’s only clue to his brother’s whereabouts is the beautiful and mysterious Alice Bright, who has led him from the whorehouses of Melbourne to a tourist town in NZ, where she is masquerading as an assistant to the psychic, Madame Blanche.
Despite increasing volcanic activity, the tourist party sets off for the Pink and White Terraces.
A terrifying night brings death and devastation. When dawn breaks, Te Wairoa and the Pink and White Terraces have been destroyed by a volcano. In the aftermath, will everyone’s secrets be revealed?
