I’m Māori and Proud is a vibrant picture book that celebrates the rich heritage of Māori, the indigenous people of Aotearoa, New Zealand. This story is crafted to instill pride and cultural awareness in young readers, encouraging them to embrace their identity by looking to Māui, a revered cultural ancestor and hero in Māori stories, as a positive role model. The book intertwines Māui’s legendary deeds with everyday examples of children demonstrating love, compassion, and the importance of relationships. It emphasizes key Māori values such as whānau (family), manaakitanga (hospitality), and kaitiakitanga (guardianship), all seamlessly integrated into daily activities and play. I’m Māori and Proud not only underscores the significance of cultural identity but also fosters a sense of belonging and pride in being uniquely oneself in the modern world. It serves as a powerful tool for teaching young readers about the beauty of their own heritage while promoting an understanding and celebration of diversity. This book is an excellent resource for learning about First Nations cultures and embracing cultural differences, both in New Zealand and around the world.
